# Remove audio from video: mute any video

Take the sound out of a video and keep the picture exactly as it is.

## How it works

1. Add a video in MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI.
2. Press Remove audio.
3. Download the same video, with no sound.

## A video without its sound track

Audo's video muter removes the sound from videos (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI) up to 10 GB without an account, and the first hour of each video is free, 10 times a day, with no sign-up. You get the same kind of file back, an MP4 for an MP4 and a MOV for a MOV, with the picture as it was.

A video file holds its picture and its sound as separate tracks, packed together. Removing the audio leaves the sound track out and copies the picture track across untouched, so nothing is decoded and saved again. That's why it's quick even for a long video, and why the picture can't lose quality.

Web pages often play background videos with no sound, and some platforms flag music they recognise. A clean, silent copy avoids both, and leaves room for a new soundtrack later with Replace audio in video or Mix audio.

Tool: Mute a video (`mute_video`). Price: 1 credit a minute — $0.01/min ($0.60/hr), with no subscription — of input for whole files, charged only when a job succeeds.

## Free API

```bash
curl -F file=@clip.mp4 https://audo.ai/api/try/mute-video -D response.headers -o response.body
```

Read response.headers and response.body before naming media. Handle 202, 200 JSON and errors with the complete response client at https://audo.ai/docs/api?utm_source=markdown&utm_medium=agent#responses.

Free for the first hour of each file, 10 times a day per person, with no key or account. Uploads up to 10 GB, 2 at once from one address. The response is the result itself; a job that runs longer than about 30 seconds returns 202 with a link to check on it. With an API key (`-H "Authorization: Bearer $AUDO_API_KEY"`), omitting free runs the whole file with credits if the balance covers it, otherwise the free portion if quota remains. Set free=true to prohibit spending; for paid whole files use free=false with an approved positive max_credits. A free result cut short comes with finishUrl (and the Audo-Finish-Url header when the response is the file itself): give it to the person, who pays there (from $5, no sign-up), and the whole file runs; keep checking the status link, whose finishedBy names the whole-file job and its own status link. No options.

## Languages

Any language: it works on the sound, not the words.

## From an assistant (MCP)

Add https://audo.ai/mcp and sign in (setup for each assistant: https://audo.ai/setup.md). The tool is `mute_video`:

> Removes the sound from a video and keeps the picture as it is: it's copied, not re-encoded, so it's fast and loses nothing. Use it to share a clip silently or to start over with a new soundtrack. Not for keeping only the sound (convert_audio). It costs 1 credit a minute of video, charged only if the job succeeds. Returns the result with download links, or job_id for get_job if it takes longer.

Example: "Use Audo to remove the sound from clip.mp4."

## Questions

**Is it free?** Yes. Audo is free for the first hour of each video, 10 times a day, with no sign-up. Whole files are $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour), with no subscription — see pricing.

**Does it lower the video quality?** No. The picture is copied as it is, not re-encoded, so it keeps every frame, its resolution, and its frame rate. Only the sound track is left out, which also makes the file a little smaller.

**How do I put a new sound on it instead?** Use Replace audio in video: it puts a new soundtrack on the same picture in one step. Mute video first only if you want a silent copy as well.

**Can I keep the voices and remove only the music?** Yes, with Remove music from video, which keeps dialogue and sound effects and takes the music out.

**Can I keep the sound and drop the picture?** That's the other way round: Extract audio from video saves a video's sound as an MP3 or a WAV.

**Why remove sound from video rather than turn the volume down?** A muted player can still be turned up, and a video with a sound track carries it wherever it's shared. A video with no sound track has nothing to play: right for website backgrounds, silent social clips, and screen recordings that caught a private call.
