# Translate subtitles: SRT and VTT translator

Translate subtitle files into multiple languages. Keep every cue and timestamp, then review and edit each translation.

## How it works

1. Upload an SRT or VTT file and correct the original text.
2. Choose the source language or detect it automatically, then choose destination languages.
3. Translate, compare each language with the original, and download SRT, VTT or all files in a ZIP.

## Translate subtitle files without redoing their timing

Audo translates uploaded SRT and VTT subtitle files up to 2 MB into up to five destination languages. Each language is translated directly from your original, not from another translation. Cue order and timestamps stay the same, so the files fit the recording you already have. No audio or video upload is needed.

Review the original as soon as you add it. Correct a name or sentence before translating so that every language starts with the same source. Afterwards, switch languages to compare the translated text beside the original. Each translation stays separate and can be edited without changing the others. If you correct the source later, the existing translations are marked for updating.

Download the original and each translated language as SRT or VTT, or collect both formats in one ZIP. Re-exporting edited subtitles does not run translation again. For subtitles burned onto a video, open Auto captions: generate the source once, choose your languages in the editor, and select one translation or original-plus-translation captions for rendering.

Tool: Translate subtitles (`translate_subtitles`). Price: 5 credits per 1,000 characters per language — $0.05 per 1,000 characters per language, with no subscription — per job’s measured quantity, charged only when a job succeeds.

## Free API

```bash
curl -F file=@subtitles.srt -F 'target_languages=["es","de"]' https://audo.ai/api/try/translate-subtitles -D response.headers -o response.body
```

Read response.headers and response.body before naming media. Handle 202, 200 JSON and errors with the complete response client at https://audo.ai/docs/api?utm_source=markdown&utm_medium=agent#responses.

Free for the first 1,000 source characters, ending at a complete cue, into up to 3 languages, 3 times a day per person. SRT or VTT uploads up to 2 MB. Free results last one hour. The response is the result itself; a job that runs longer than about 30 seconds returns 202 with a link to check on it. With an API key (`-H "Authorization: Bearer $AUDO_API_KEY"`), omitting free runs the whole file with credits if the balance covers it, otherwise the free portion if quota remains. Set free=true to prohibit spending; for paid whole files use free=false with an approved positive max_credits. A free result cut short comes with finishUrl (and the Audo-Finish-Url header when the response is the file itself): give it to the person, who pays there (from $5, no sign-up), and the whole file runs; keep checking the status link, whose finishedBy names the whole-file job and its own status link. ## Options

Form fields with the same names as the MCP tool's inputs:

- `source_language`: The source language code. Default: detected.

## Languages

Any language: it works on the sound, not the words.

## From an assistant (MCP)

Add https://audo.ai/mcp and sign in (setup for each assistant: https://audo.ai/setup.md). The tool is `translate_subtitles`:

> Translates an uploaded SRT or VTT file into up to 5 languages, preserving cue order and timestamps. Costs 5 credits per 1,000 source-text characters per language, rounded up with a 5-credit minimum per language; only successful languages are charged. Free use translates the first 1,000 characters ending at a complete cue into up to 3 languages, 3 times a day. Returns language-labelled SRT/VTT downloads, source revision and detected language, or job_id for get_job.

Example: "Translate these SRT subtitles into Spanish and German."

## Questions

**Can I translate subtitles for free?** Audo translates the first 1,000 source characters, ending at a complete cue, into up to three languages, three times a day. Free downloads stay available for one hour. No sign-up.

**Does translation change the timing?** No. Each translation keeps the original cue order, boundaries and timestamps. You can edit its words before downloading.

**How is the full file priced?** The price depends on source-text characters and destination languages. Spaces and punctuation count; timestamps, cue numbers and formatting tags do not. The full price appears before you run. Only successful languages are charged.

**Can I start with a video?** Use Auto captions to generate subtitles once, correct the source, then translate them in the editor.
