# Video Compressor: Compress Video & MP4 Online

Reduce video file size for Discord, email, or WhatsApp to a target MB or quality.

## How it works

1. Upload the MP4, MOV, MKV, or WebM video you want to shrink.
2. Choose a target MB preset (like Discord or email), a custom MB ceiling, or a quality level.
3. Compress and download the smaller MP4.

## Hitting an exact megabyte target vs. constant quality

Audo’s online video compressor reduces the file size of MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, and AVI recordings up to 2 GB without an account, with the first 10 minutes free, 10 times a day, and no sign-up. Phone cameras and screen recorders routinely produce hundreds of megabytes per minute—far above the upload limits of Discord, WhatsApp, Slack, and email.

When you compress MP4 or MOV files by target megabytes, Audo calculates the exact bitrate budget from your clip’s duration, encodes the video and 96 kbps AAC soundtrack, and verifies the final byte count. When you only want a lighter file for storage or faster web playback without a hard MB cap, Quality mode compresses static scenes gently while preserving detail during fast motion.

Tool: Compress video (`compress_video`). Price: 1 credit a minute — $0.01/min ($0.60/hr), with no subscription — of input for whole files, charged only when a job succeeds.

## Free API

```bash
curl -F file=@clip.mp4 https://audo.ai/api/try/video-compressor -D response.headers -o response.body
```

Read response.headers and response.body before naming media. Handle 202, 200 JSON and errors with the complete response client at https://audo.ai/docs/api?utm_source=markdown&utm_medium=agent#responses.

Free for the first 10 minutes of each file, 10 times a day per person, with no key or account. Uploads up to 10 GB, 2 at once from one address. The response is the result itself; a job that runs longer than about 30 seconds returns 202 with a link to check on it. With an API key (`-H "Authorization: Bearer $AUDO_API_KEY"`), omitting free runs the whole file with credits if the balance covers it, otherwise the free portion if quota remains. Set free=true to prohibit spending; for paid whole files use free=false with an approved positive max_credits. A free result cut short comes with finishUrl (and the Audo-Finish-Url header when the response is the file itself): give it to the person, who pays there (from $5, no sign-up), and the whole file runs; keep checking the status link, whose finishedBy names the whole-file job and its own status link. ## Options

Form fields with the same names as the MCP tool's inputs:

- `target`: Size preset: 20, 50, 16, or 25 decimal MB, or size_mb. Leave out for quality mode; without either, discord_free.
- `size_mb`: Custom size in decimal MB. Needs target size_mb.
- `quality`: Constant quality instead of a size target: 0 to 51, lower is clearer. Leave target and size_mb out.
- `max_height`: Maximum output height in pixels; never enlarges the input.
- `mute`: Remove the soundtrack. Default false.
- `fps`: Frame rate cap; never raises the input frame rate.

## Languages

Any language: it works on the sound, not the words.

## From an assistant (MCP)

Add https://audo.ai/mcp and sign in (setup for each assistant: https://audo.ai/setup.md). The tool is `compress_video`:

> Makes a smaller MP4 for Discord, WhatsApp, email, a custom size in MB, or a chosen quality. Supports a height limit, frame rate cap, and mute. A size target uses two passes; targets below the minimum bitrate are refused. Quotes include the size estimate. It costs 1 credit a minute of input, charged only if the job succeeds. Returns the result with download links, or job_id for get_job if it takes longer.

Example: "Use Audo to compress video from clip.mp4."

## Questions

**How do I reduce video file size to fit an attachment limit?** Choose a size preset or enter a custom target in megabytes. Audo reserves space for the audio track and MP4 container first, then calculates the highest video bitrate that fits underneath your ceiling. It checks the finished download and refuses an output that cannot meet your requested size.

**Which preset should I pick as a video compressor for Discord?** Pick the Discord free preset to stay under 10 MB or 20 MB attachment caps, or the 50 MB preset for Nitro Basic. Because Audo measures sizes in decimal megabytes, any clip that meets the target also fits platforms that measure limits in MiB.

**How do I compress an MP4 without making it blurry?** Use Quality mode when visual sharpness matters more than hitting an exact byte cap, or combine a target MB size with a step down from 4K or 1080p to 720p. Giving the encoder slightly fewer pixels allows each remaining pixel to keep more detail at the same file size.

**Why does a tiny MB target sometimes get refused?** Every second of video needs a minimum amount of data to stay watchable. A long recording at 1080p and 60 fps may require more bits than a small attachment limit allows. Lower the resolution height, cap the frame rate, mute unneeded audio, or trim the clip first.

**Does lowering resolution or frame rate help shrink video size?** Yes. Scaling a tall 1080p or 4K clip down to 720p cuts the pixel count by more than half while looking crisp on phones and laptops. Capping a 60 fps screen recording at 30 fps also frees bitrate for clearer text and faces.

**What happens to the sound when I compress a video?** Audio is encoded as a compact 96 kbps stereo AAC track so most of your megabyte budget goes to the picture. Choosing Mute removes the audio track completely and gives 100% of the target file size to the video stream.

**Is it free?** Yes. Audo processes the first 10 minutes free, 10 times a day, without an account. The whole file costs $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour), charged only on success. No subscription. See pricing.
