# Video to GIF Converter: Turn MP4 or MOV into a GIF

Convert video to animated GIF or WebP: pick a clip range, width, frame rate, and file size target.

## How it works

1. Add your MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, or AVI video.
2. Choose the start and end seconds, width, frame rate, and GIF or WebP.
3. Make your animation, preview the loop, and download the file.

## A short video moment, ready to loop as GIF or WebP

Audo's video to GIF converter turns MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, and AVI videos up to 2 GB into looping animated GIF and WebP files without an account, with clip ranges up to 5 minutes free, 10 times a day, and no sign-up. Whether you are converting MP4 to GIF for a product changelog or MOV to GIF from an iPhone screen recording, you can trim the exact start and end seconds right on the page and see the output file size, dimensions, and frame count.

Instead of a generic fixed palette that causes heavy speckling, Audo generates a custom per-clip color palette with Sierra dithering so skin tones, UI text, and gradients stay clean across every frame.

Tool: Video to GIF (`video_to_gif`). Price: 1 credit a minute — $0.01/min ($0.60/hr), with no subscription — of input for whole files, charged only when a job succeeds.

## Free API

```bash
curl -F file=@clip.mp4 -F start_seconds=1 -F end_seconds=3 https://audo.ai/api/try/video-to-gif -D response.headers -o response.body
```

Read response.headers and response.body before naming media. Handle 202, 200 JSON and errors with the complete response client at https://audo.ai/docs/api?utm_source=markdown&utm_medium=agent#responses.

Free for the first 5 minutes of each file, 10 times a day per person, with no key or account. Uploads up to 10 GB, 2 at once from one address. The response is the result itself; a job that runs longer than about 30 seconds returns 202 with a link to check on it. With an API key (`-H "Authorization: Bearer $AUDO_API_KEY"`), omitting free runs the whole file with credits if the balance covers it, otherwise the free portion if quota remains. Set free=true to prohibit spending; for paid whole files use free=false with an approved positive max_credits. A free result cut short comes with finishUrl (and the Audo-Finish-Url header when the response is the file itself): give it to the person, who pays there (from $5, no sign-up), and the whole file runs; keep checking the status link, whose finishedBy names the whole-file job and its own status link. ## Options

Form fields with the same names as the MCP tool's inputs:

- `start_seconds`: Start of the range in seconds. Default 0.
- `end_seconds`: End of the range in seconds; choose up to 5 minutes. Default end of the video, refused if that range is longer than 5 minutes.
- `fps`: Frames per second, 5 to 30. Default 15.
- `width`: Width in pixels, keeping proportions. 120 to 1280. Default 480.
- `loop`: Repeat count: 0 repeats forever. Default 0.
- `format`: Animated GIF or animated WebP. Default gif.
- `max_mb`: Target size in decimal MB. Estimates smaller starting settings and tries at most 3 encodes, lowering fps, width, and GIF colours; a target that cannot be met fails without a charge.

## Languages

Any language: it works on the sound, not the words.

## From an assistant (MCP)

Add https://audo.ai/mcp and sign in (setup for each assistant: https://audo.ai/setup.md). The tool is `video_to_gif`:

> Turns a video range of up to 5 minutes into an animated GIF or WebP. Choose start and end seconds, frame rate, width, and loop count (0 repeats forever). An optional size target estimates starting settings, then uses at most 3 encode attempts, lowering frame rate, width, and GIF colours and reporting changes. Works on silent video. It costs 1 credit a minute of the selected range, charged only if the job succeeds. Free 10 times a day. Returns the animation, size, dimensions, and frame count with download links, or job_id for get_job if it takes longer.

Example: "Use Audo to turn seconds 1 to 3 of clip.mp4 into a 480-pixel GIF."

## Questions

**Is Audo's video to GIF converter free?** Audo makes GIF and WebP animations up to 5 minutes long free, 10 times a day, without signing up. Paid runs cost $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour) of the selected range, with a minimum of $0.01 per job, charged only when it succeeds. There is no subscription.

**How do I convert MP4 to GIF or MOV to GIF without a huge file size?** Choose a tight clip range first: a two-second reaction or UI step needs far fewer frames than a whole scene. Lower the width for chat, GitHub, or email, then lower the frame rate if the motion still reads clearly. Audo's optional size target automatically steps down width, frames per second, and GIF palette colors until the animation fits your megabyte cap.

**Should I choose animated GIF or video to WebP?** GIF is universally supported across Slack, Discord, GitHub READMEs, email clients, and docs, though its 256-color palette can show banding in smooth gradients. Choosing WebP (video to WebP) supports full color and usually produces a significantly smaller file. Both formats play silently without audio.

**Can I turn a YouTube video into a GIF?** For a YouTube video to GIF, first download a video file you own or have permission to use. Upload that MP4 or WebM file to Audo and select the start and end seconds you want to loop. This page converts uploaded video files rather than YouTube watch-page URLs.

**How do frame rate, width, and loop count work?** Audo defaults to 15 frames per second and 480 pixels wide while preserving your video's aspect ratio. Use up to 30 fps for fast motion or 5–10 fps for a clean software walkthrough. A repeat count of 0 loops forever; enter a positive number if the animation should stop after a set number of plays.
