How to compress an MP3

  1. 1

Add an MP3, a WAV, or another recording.

  2. 2

Pick a lower bitrate for a smaller file.

  3. 3

    Download the smaller MP3.

What makes a file big

Three things set an audio file's size: how long it is, its bitrate, and whether it's stereo or mono. Bitrate is how much data each second of sound gets, in kilobits a second (kbps). A WAV isn't compressed at all, so a minute takes about 10 MB; an MP3 leaves out detail people rarely hear, and the lower its bitrate, the more it leaves out.

Email, chat apps, and upload forms each set their own size limit, and they change them from time to time, so check the one you're sending to. Then work back from it: a 10-minute recording at 64 kbps is about 4.8 MB, and at 32 kbps about 2.4 MB, which suits only speech.

Questions

How much smaller will it be?

An MP3's size follows its bitrate. At 64 kbps, a minute is about 0.5 MB, against 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and about 10 MB for a CD-quality WAV, so an hour-long recording comes to about 29 MB.

Which bitrate should I pick?

For a voice, such as a lecture, a meeting, or a voice note, 64 kbps is clear, and 48 kbps in mono still is. For music, stay at 128 kbps or more, or it starts to sound thin and swirly.

Should I make it mono?

For a single voice, yes. Under More options, Channels turns stereo into mono, and the bitrate then carries one channel instead of two, so a voice sounds clearer at the same size. Keep stereo for music.

Why didn't my MP3 get smaller?

It was already at or under the bitrate you picked. File info shows a file's bitrate, so check it and pick a lower one. To make a recording shorter instead, cut it or remove its long pauses.

Can I compress a WAV?

Yes, and that saves the most: a WAV turned into a 128 kbps MP3 is about a tenth of the size. To keep every detail in a smaller file, pick FLAC instead, usually around half the WAV.

Is this the same as a compressor in an audio editor?

No. This makes the file smaller. A compressor in an editor evens out loud and quiet moments, which is another job: Balance audio evens out voices, and Boost volume sets the overall level.

Is it free?

Yes, for the first hour of each file, 10 times a day, with no sign-up. For longer files, see pricing.

What happens to my files?

They stay private. Files are deleted after 24 hours, and free results after 1 hour.
