Why voices end up uneven

Audo's audio leveler evens out the voices in one recording or 2 to 10 tracks, audio (WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WebM, AIFF) or video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI), up to 100 MB each without an account; the first 3 minutes are free, 3 times a day, with no sign-up. A 3-minute file is usually ready in about 14 seconds, and a 20-minute episode in about 30.

One person sits closer to the microphone. Two people use different mics. A guest joins over a call, or speaks softly. Listeners then keep reaching for the volume: up for the quiet guest, down when the host comes back. Turning the whole file up doesn't help, because the loud voice gets louder too.

Balance audio gives each speaker one steady level from their own speech, raising or lowering them by up to 15 dB, and moves smoothly from one to the next. A very quiet voice brings its background noise up with it, so clean the recording with Remove noise before you balance it.

Questions

What does an audio leveler do?

It evens out loud and quiet voices, so listeners don't keep reaching for the volume. Each speaker gets one steady level from their own speech, then the whole file is set to a standard level.

Is there a free audio leveler?

Yes. Audo's audio leveler is free for the first 3 minutes, 3 times a day, with no sign-up. Longer recordings cost $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour) with no subscription: see pricing.

How do I even out a podcast guest who's quieter than the host?

Add the recording, or a separate track for each speaker (2 to 10 tracks), and press Balance audio. Audo measures each speaker from their own speech and brings a quiet guest up to match the host, without raising background noise in the pauses. To match levels across separate files played one after another, such as an intro and an episode, use Merge audio instead.

One recording, or a track for each person?

Either works. A track for each person, 2 to 10 of them, gives the most even result, and each comes back as its own file, ready to mix. With one recording, Audo finds who speaks when.

Is it the same as normalizing?

No. Normalizing sets the whole file to one level, which Boost volume does. Balance audio evens out the voices inside it first, so a quiet guest comes up to meet the host, then sets the level.

What if someone leans away from the mic?

Switch on Even out each voice too, under More options. It also smooths slow changes within one person, by up to 6 dB.

How loud is the result?

Podcast level, the one podcast apps expect, unless you pick YouTube or broadcast. A level of your own is under More options.

Can ChatGPT or Claude level audio in a podcast?

Yes, with Audo added to it. Attach the podcast recording and ask it to even out the speakers, and Audo levels the quiet and loud voices and sends back the balanced file. Claude works the same way. Add Audo to your assistant once, and it's there in every chat.
