Lossy formats save space by leaving out detail people rarely hear. MP3 plays on almost everything. M4A, which holds AAC sound, suits Apple devices and usually sounds a little better than MP3 at the same size. OGG and Opus are open formats, small, and good for the web and for speech.

Lossless formats keep every detail. WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB a minute at CD quality, and it's the format editors and many apps expect. FLAC keeps every detail in a smaller file. Turning a lossy file into a lossless one doesn't bring detail back: it only makes the file bigger.

What do bitrate and sample rate change?

Bitrate is how much of the sound a lossy file keeps each second: higher means more detail and a bigger file, from 16 to 320 kbps. Sample rate is how many times a second the sound is measured, from 8,000 to 48,000 Hz. Left alone, both are chosen to suit your file.

Will converting change the volume?

No. The file comes out as loud as it went in. Where peaks would go past the very top, they're brought just under it, so nothing clips.

Can I make it mono?

Yes. Under More options, Channels turns stereo into mono by averaging the two sides, or mono into stereo with the same sound on both. A mono WAV is half the size of a stereo one.

What happens to my files?

They stay private. Files are deleted after 24 hours, and free results after 1 hour.
