Why rooms echo

Audo's echo remover works on audio (WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WebM, AIFF) and video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI) up to 100 MB without an account, with the first minute of each file free, 3 times a day, and no sign-up. The first minute usually comes back in about 11 seconds, and a 22-minute recording in about 45 seconds. It rebuilds the voice without the room, and noise goes with the echo. If the room sounds fine and only the background is noisy, Remove noise keeps the voice exactly as recorded.

Echo, also called reverb, is sound bouncing off hard walls, floors, ceilings, and windows, so each word keeps ringing after it's said. Big, bare, or empty rooms ring the most: halls, stairwells, kitchens, bathrooms, and empty offices. The further you are from the mic, the more of the room it hears, and the further away you sound.

Next time, get closer to the mic, record in a room with soft things in it, such as curtains, carpet, a sofa, or clothes, and stay out of bare corners. The examples above are real rooms: a lecture hall, a gallery, and a stairwell.

Questions

Is there a free way to remove echo from audio?

Yes. Audo's echo remover is free for the first minute of each file, 3 times a day, with no sign-up, for audio and video alike. Longer files cost $0.03 a minute ($1.80 an hour), with no subscription: see pricing.

How do I remove reverb from an audio file?

Add the file at the top of this page, set How much echo to remove, and download the clear version. The room's ringing goes, and the voice sounds close again.

Is echo the same as reverb?

In a recording, yes: both mean the room ringing on after each word. Remove echo takes the ringing away and keeps the voice, and background noise goes too.

How do I remove echo from audio on iPhone?

Open this page on your iPhone, add the voice memo or video, and download the clear version. Android phones work the same way.

Do I need a plugin or software to remove reverb?

No. It works in the browser on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install or set up.

Can it remove echo from a video?

Yes. You get the same video back, picture untouched, with the room's echo gone from the sound.

Can I keep a little of the room?

Yes. Move the slider from Remove all toward Keep some of the room for a more natural sound.

Can it fix a whole lecture?

Yes. A recording from the back of a lecture hall is exactly what it's for, and one of the examples above is one. Signed in, files can run up to 10 hours. Want it as text too? Transcribe turns the clear lecture into text.
