What isolating a voice means
Isolating a voice means keeping each person who speaks and taking out everything around them. The example above is an interview with a rugby coach, recorded outdoors at the ground right after a match. The original has the sound of the ground all around him. The isolated version keeps only his voice, as the microphone caught it.
For the best results next time, keep the microphone close to the speaker and away from loud sounds such as traffic. The quieter the recording, the less there is to take out, and the better the voice sounds. Outdoors, put a windscreen on the microphone to keep the wind out.
Questions
Is it free?
Yes, for the first minute of each file, 3 times a day, with no sign-up. For longer files, see pricing.
Is it for speech or for songs?
Speech. Many voice isolators are made for songs: they pull the singing out of the music. This one keeps a speaking voice and removes everything else. Singing is a voice too, so for a song's vocals or instruments on their own, use a vocal remover.
Does it work with more than one speaker?
Yes. People speaking into the recording stay, from a two-person interview to a whole panel. Voices far off in the background, such as chatter at the next table or a crowd, count as background and go.
Can I isolate the voice from a video?
Yes. Add a video, such as an MP4 or MOV, and you get the same video back: the picture is copied as it is, and its sound is just the voice. To keep only the voice as audio, choose MP3 or WAV under Save as in More options.
Does the voice sound different?
No. It filters out what's behind the voice and adds nothing, so the voice isn't regenerated or replaced. It still sounds like the person who spoke. If the voice itself is the problem, such as a bad mic or a phone line, try Audio enhancer.
What does it remove?
Background noise, such as wind, traffic, hum, and hiss, along with music, sound effects, and distant chatter. Voices close to the mic are kept. It doesn't take out echo, though: for a voice in a big, echoey room, use Remove echo.
How long does it take?
The first minute of a file is usually ready in about 10 seconds, and a 20-minute recording in about a minute. Files can run up to 10 hours.
