DaVinci Resolve Voice Isolation: Why It's Missing and How to Do It Without Studio

Why the Voice Isolation switch isn't in the free version of DaVinci Resolve, what Fairlight's built-in filters do, and how to clean a clip's dialogue outside Resolve.

Quick answer

In DaVinci Resolve, AI Voice Isolation, Dialogue Separator, and Music Remixer run on the DaVinci Neural Engine and only come with DaVinci Resolve Studio (a one-time license: US$295 list price, currently US$236 on Blackmagic Design's US store). They aren't in the free version of DaVinci Resolve. If you edit in the free version and need to strip background noise, traffic, chatter, or echo from a clip, Audo AI's Voice isolator and Audio enhancer clean MP4, MOV, MKV, and WAV files in the browser and give a video back with the picture untouched, so it drops back onto your timeline in sync. The first minute of each file is free with no sign-up, and whole files up to 10 hours are $3.00 an hour ($0.05 a minute).

Why Voice Isolation doesn't show up in free DaVinci Resolve

Tutorials for DaVinci Resolve often point to the Voice Isolation toggle in the Inspector or on Fairlight channel strips. When you open the same panel in the free version of DaVinci Resolve, that section isn't there.

Blackmagic Design includes DaVinci Neural Engine AI Voice Isolation, Dialogue Separator, and Music Remixer only in DaVinci Resolve Studio (US$295 MSRP, listed at US$236 on Blackmagic Design's US store). If you only need to clean up dialogue on a few videos and don't need Studio's other features, Audo AI runs neural voice isolation, echo removal, and dialogue-from-music separation in your browser for $0.05 to $0.08 a minute.

What the free version of DaVinci Resolve includes on the Fairlight page

The free version of DaVinci Resolve still gives you Fairlight's built-in repair plugins in the Effects Library (under Fairlight FX), alongside a 6-band parametric EQ and dynamics (expander/gate, compressor, and limiter) on every track:

  • Fairlight FX Noise Reduction. Drag Noise Reduction onto a clip or track. It can automatically detect steady background noise, or you can highlight a 1- to 2-second pause where nobody is speaking, click Learn, and subtract that noise profile. It works well for steady fan noise, air conditioning, or preamp hiss.
  • De-Hummer and De-Esser. De-Hummer notches out 50 Hz or 60 Hz power-line hum and its harmonics, and De-Esser tames sharp 's' sounds.
  • Where built-in filters struggle. Spectral noise prints can't lock onto sounds that change every second, such as street traffic, wind gusts, café chatter, background music, or hollow room echo, without making the speaker sound underwater. For those clips, use Audo AI before or during your edit.

How to isolate dialogue for a DaVinci Resolve timeline with Audo AI

You can clean either the raw camera clip before importing it into Resolve, or a bounced WAV from your timeline:

  • Option 1: Drop the MP4, MOV, or MKV directly into Audo AI. Open Audo AI's Voice isolator or Remove noise from video for wind, traffic, and background chatter; Audio enhancer for hollow room echo; or Remove music from video to keep sound effects while stripping background music. Audo cleans the audio and copies your video stream bit-for-bit without re-encoding the picture, so it drops straight onto your DaVinci Resolve timeline.
  • Option 2: Bounce only the dialogue track as a WAV from Fairlight. If you already cut your timeline in DaVinci Resolve, right-click the dialogue clip or track on the Fairlight page and choose Bounce Clip to Files (or export a WAV on the Deliver page). Run the WAV through Audo AI's Voice isolator or Audio enhancer, then place the cleaned WAV on a track below the muted original.

When Fairlight's built-in tools or DaVinci Resolve Studio is the better choice

Pick the option that fits your footage and how often you edit:

  • Fairlight's built-in Noise Reduction (free in Resolve). If your clip only has a steady hum, computer fan, or light mic hiss and a clean silent pause to sample, Fairlight's Noise Reduction plugin handles it right inside the free version at no cost.
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio (US$236–$295 one-time). If you edit in Resolve every week and also want real-time track-level Voice Isolation on your timeline, 10-bit H.264/H.265 hardware decoding, Magic Mask, Super Scale, and temporal/spatial video noise reduction, the one-time Studio license pays for itself.
  • Audo AI. If you use the free version of DaVinci Resolve and need to rescue an interview, vlog, or wedding speech from wind, crowd noise, background music, or room echo, paying $3.00 an hour ($0.05 a minute) only when you have a noisy clip, with the first minute free.

Questions

Does the free version of DaVinci Resolve have Voice Isolation?

No. DaVinci Neural Engine AI Voice Isolation, Dialogue Separator, and Music Remixer are only in DaVinci Resolve Studio (US$295 list price, currently US$236 on Blackmagic Design's US store). The free version includes Fairlight FX Noise Reduction, De-Hummer, and De-Esser. To isolate dialogue without buying Studio, run the video or WAV through Audo AI's Voice isolator.

Does Audo AI re-encode my video when it cleans the audio?

No. When you upload an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, or AVI to Audo AI's Voice isolator, Remove noise from video, or Audio enhancer with the format left on Same as the original, Audo copies the original video stream bit-for-bit and only replaces the audio track.

How do I remove room echo from dialogue for DaVinci Resolve?

Voice isolator and Fairlight's Noise Reduction target sounds behind the speaker, not the speaker's own voice bouncing off bare walls. For room echo and reverb, run the video or WAV through Audo AI's Remove echo or Audio enhancer, which rebuild the dry voice and include a slider to keep a natural touch of the room.

How do I remove background music from a video clip while keeping sound effects?

Use Audo AI's Remove music from video. It splits the soundtrack into three stereo stems (dialogue, background music, and sound effects) and gives back your video with the music removed and the dialogue and effects intact, plus each stem as its own file.

What does it cost to clean a 20-minute video clip on Audo AI?

$1.00 ($0.05 a minute, or $3.00 an hour) on Voice isolator, Remove noise, or Audio enhancer, paid from a one-time $5 credit pack that never expires. The first minute of every file is free, 3 times a day, with no sign-up.
