How to Make a Phone Recording Sound Like a Studio

Why phone recordings sound thin and echoey, what the iPhone's own settings do, and how to fix the file you'll share.

Quick answer

Audo AI's Audio enhancer makes a phone recording sound like it was recorded on a good microphone in a quiet room: it runs in your phone's browser, takes voice memos and videos, and changes the file itself, so it sounds the same wherever you share it. The first minute of each file is free with no sign-up, and whole files are $1.80 an hour. The iPhone's own Enhance Recording, in Voice Memos, only changes how a recording sounds when you play it there.

Why phone recordings sound thin and echoey

A phone's microphone hears everything around you, not just your voice. Hard walls and floors bounce your voice back into it, which sounds like echo, and fans or traffic slip in behind you.

The further the phone is from your mouth, the more of the room it hears, and the thinner and further away you sound.

How to fix a recording you already made

You don't have to record again. Audo's Audio enhancer rebuilds the voice and removes the echo and noise, right in your phone's browser:

  • Step 1: Open the Audio enhancer. Open audo.ai/audio-enhancer in the browser on your iPhone or Android phone. There's no app to install.
  • Step 2: Add the recording or video. Add the voice memo (M4A), an MP3 or WAV, or a video such as an MP4 or MOV. Without an account, files up to 100 MB work; signed in, up to 10 GB and 10 hours.
  • Step 3: Listen, then download. The first minute is usually back in about 11 seconds. Strength goes from Full to Subtle to keep more of your own sound. A video comes back with the picture untouched, and the new file sounds the same wherever you share it.

What the iPhone's own settings do, and don't

Voice Memos has a playback option, Enhance Recording, that reduces background noise and echo when you play Mono and Stereo recordings. Apple says changing these settings doesn't affect the recording itself, so the file you send or upload still has the noise and echo.

Its Studio Sound option adjusts background sound and reverb so a voice sounds more like it was recorded in a studio, but only for Spatial Audio recordings, and also only when you play them.

How to record better next time

A few habits make any recording easier to clean up:

  • Get close. Hold the phone near your mouth. Your voice sounds fuller and the room fades.
  • Pick a soft room. Curtains, carpet, a sofa, or clothes soak up the echo before it reaches the microphone.
  • Stay out of bare corners. Hard walls and corners bounce your voice back. Move toward the middle of the room, or near soft furniture.

When another option is enough

Not every recording needs rebuilding:

  • Voice Memos' Enhance Recording. If you'll only ever play it on your own iPhone, turn on Enhance Recording in the playback options. The file you share stays as it was.
  • Adobe's free plan. For short audio, Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech is free with an Adobe sign-in for files up to 30 minutes and 500 MB, up to 1 hour a day, without video or a strength control.
  • Audo's Remove noise. If your voice already sounds fine and only the background is noisy, Remove noise filters the noise out and keeps your voice exactly as recorded.

Make your recording sound studio-quality

Open the Audio enhancer in your phone's browser, add the recording or video, and download the new file. Free to try. No sign-up.

Questions

How do I make a voice memo sound professional?

Run it through a tool that rebuilds the voice and removes the echo and noise, such as Audo AI's Audio enhancer. It takes M4A voice memos right in your phone's browser and gives back a file that sounds as if it was recorded on a good microphone in a quiet room.

Does iPhone's Enhance Recording change the file?

No. Apple says changing Voice Memos' playback settings doesn't affect the recording itself. For a file that sounds better wherever you share it, use a tool that changes the recording.

Can I make a phone video's sound better?

Yes. Audo's Audio enhancer takes MP4 and MOV videos, rebuilds the voice, and gives the video back with the picture untouched. Adobe's free plan doesn't take video.

Will it sound like me?

At full strength it can sound a little different, because it rebuilds the voice rather than filtering it. Turn Strength from Full toward Subtle to mix more of your own recording back in.

Is there a free way to make a phone recording sound better?

Audo AI does the first minute of each file free, 3 times a day, with no sign-up. Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech is free for audio files under 30 minutes with an Adobe sign-in, and Voice Memos' Enhance Recording is free but only changes playback.
