How to Remove Echo from a Room Recording

Why rooms echo, why a noise filter doesn't help, and how to make a voice from a big or empty room sound close and clear.

Updated October 20, 2026Michael NguyenTested October 2026

Quick answer

Echo is your own voice bouncing back off the room's hard surfaces, so a noise filter, made for sounds behind the voice, doesn't take it out. Audo AI's Remove echo rebuilds the voice without the room, in the browser, on audio or video files up to 10 hours signed in, with a slider to keep some of the room; the first minute of each file is free with no sign-up, and whole files are $1.80 an hour. On the desktop, iZotope RX includes De-reverb from $99 (RX Elements).

Why rooms echo, and why noise removal doesn't fix it

Echo, also called reverb, is sound bouncing off hard walls, floors, ceilings, and windows, so each word keeps ringing after it's said. Big, bare, or empty rooms ring the most: halls, stairwells, kitchens, bathrooms, and empty offices. The further you are from the microphone, the more of the room it hears.

Background noise is a separate sound sitting behind the voice, such as a fan or hum. Echo is the voice itself coming back a moment later. That's why a plain noise filter leaves it in: removing echo takes a tool that rebuilds the voice without the room.

How to remove echo from a recording you already have

You don't need to record again. With Audo's Remove echo, it takes a few minutes in the browser:

  • Step 1: Open Remove echo. Go to audo.ai/remove-echo on a computer or a phone. There's nothing to install.
  • Step 2: Add the recording or video. Add the audio, or a video such as an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, or AVI. Without an account, files up to 100 MB work; signed in, up to 10 GB and 10 hours, long enough for a whole lecture.
  • Step 3: Choose how much echo to remove. Set the slider anywhere from Keep some of the room to Remove all. The first minute is free and usually back in about 11 seconds; a whole file is $0.03 a minute. Background noise goes too, and a video comes back with the picture untouched.

How much of the room to keep

Taking out every bit of the room can make a voice sound unnaturally dry, as if it were recorded in a small booth. Leaving a little of the room often sounds more natural, especially for a lecture or an interview. Try the slider at Remove all, then move it toward Keep some of the room until it sounds right.

How to record with less echo next time

The best echo removal is a recording with less of it:

  • Get closer to the microphone. The closer you are, the louder your voice is next to the room, so there's less echo to remove.
  • Add soft things. Curtains, a rug, a sofa, or clothes on a rack soak up sound before it bounces back.
  • Stay out of bare corners. Corners and bare walls ring the most. Record nearer the middle of the room, by soft furniture.

When desktop software or another tool is the better choice

Pick the tool that fits how you already work:

  • iZotope RX. If you edit audio on the desktop and want hands-on repair tools, RX includes De-reverb in every edition, from RX Elements at $99.
  • Adobe's free plan. For short audio, Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech removes reverb for free with an Adobe sign-in, for files up to 30 minutes, up to 1 hour a day, without video or a strength control.
  • Descript. If you already edit in Descript, Studio Sound reduces noise and echo inside the editor, with the Hobbyist plan at $24 a month, or $16 billed annually.

Drop the recording or video into Remove echo and choose how much of the room to keep. Free to try. No sign-up.

Questions

Can you remove echo from a recording after it's made?

Yes. A tool that rebuilds the voice, such as Audo AI's Remove echo, takes the room out of a recording you already have, audio or video. Desktop software such as iZotope RX has a De-reverb tool too.

Why doesn't noise removal get rid of echo?

Noise removal is made for sounds behind the voice, such as hum or a fan. Echo is the voice itself bouncing back, so a noise filter can't tell it apart from the voice and leaves it in.

How do I remove echo from a video?

Add the video to Audo's Remove echo. It takes MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, and AVI files and gives the video back with the echo gone from the sound and the picture untouched.

Can Audacity remove echo?

Audacity's manual describes its Noise Reduction effect as being for constant background sounds such as hum, whistle, and whine. Echo isn't a constant background sound, so for echo, use a tool made to remove it.

Is there a free way to remove echo from audio?

Audo AI removes echo from the first minute of each file free, 3 times a day, with no sign-up. Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech removes reverb for free from audio files under 30 minutes, with an Adobe sign-in.
