Why games use OGG
Audo turns MP3s, or WAV and FLAC originals, into OGG Vorbis files with no sign-up: each can be up to 10 GB, and the first hour of every file converts free, 10 times a day. A 3-minute track is usually done in about 4 seconds.
OGG Vorbis is an open format from the Xiph.Org Foundation, free to use with no license fees. That's why game engines, mods, and open-source apps chose it: Unity and Godot import it, Minecraft's sounds are OGG files, and RPG Maker reads it too.
An MP3 becomes an OGG at about the same bitrate, so the file stays about the same size and sounds the same. For voice lines and chat apps, pick Opus instead: it's newer, and it sounds clearer than Vorbis at low bitrates.
Questions
Is it OGG Vorbis or Opus?
OGG Vorbis: the .ogg file games and most apps expect. For Opus, the newer format made for speech and small files, pick Opus under Convert to, and you get an .opus file.
Will it work in Unity, Godot, or Minecraft?
Yes. Unity and Godot both import OGG Vorbis, and a Minecraft resource pack needs its sounds as .ogg files holding Vorbis, which is what you get here.
Is OGG a better format than MP3?
For games and open-source apps, yes: it's the format they expect, and at the same size it sounds as good as MP3 or better. To play on any phone, car, or app, MP3 is still the safer pick.
Is OGG higher quality than WAV?
No. A WAV keeps every detail, and an OGG leaves some out to stay small. To change an OGG into a WAV for an editor, add it here and pick WAV under Convert to, though that won't bring the detail back.
Does it lose quality?
A little, in theory: MP3 and Vorbis both leave out detail, so going from one to the other drops a bit more. The OGG keeps about the MP3's bitrate, and most people can't tell them apart. If you still have the original WAV or FLAC, convert that instead.
How big will the OGG be?
About as big as the MP3, since it keeps about the same bitrate. For smaller game sounds, set a lower bitrate under More options, such as 96 kbps.
Is it free?
Yes. Audo is free for the first hour of each file, 10 times a day, with no sign-up. Whole files are $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour), with no subscription — see pricing.
What happens to my files?
They stay private. Files are deleted after 24 hours, and free results after 1 hour.
