Video sound for editing
Audo's MP4 to WAV converter takes one step: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI files up to 10 GB work with no account, and the first hour of each is free, 10 times a day. A 3-minute video's sound is usually ready in about 4 seconds.
MP4 is the most common video file: phones, cameras, screen recorders, and video calls all save it. The WAV holds the video's first sound track, and the picture is left out.
Video editors, audio editors, and transcription services all open WAV, and many prefer it. Podcasts, voiceovers, and music videos are usually edited from WAV, then shared as MP3 or put back on the video at the end.
Questions
Is MP4 as good as WAV?
For sound, no. Most MP4s carry AAC sound, which left some detail out when the video was saved, while a WAV keeps every sample. A WAV made from an MP4 holds exactly what's still there, so nothing more is lost from here on, but nothing comes back either.
Can I convert MP4 to WAV for free?
Yes, with no sign-up on Audo: the first hour of each video converts free, 10 times a day. Videos up to 10 GB work without an account, and up to 10 hours signed in; beyond the free part, it's $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour) with no subscription — see pricing.
How do I change MP4 to WAV on Windows or a Mac?
Open this page in any browser, choose the MP4, and save the WAV that comes back. Windows and Mac work alike, and so does a phone.
Why WAV and not MP3?
An editor works best from a WAV: you can cut, mix, and save it again and again without it wearing down, where an MP3 drops a little more detail each time it's saved. Edit the WAV, and make an MP3 once, when you're done.
Is it 16-bit or 24-bit?
16-bit for the sound in phone and web videos, which holds all of it. A camera that records uncompressed 24-bit sound gets a 24-bit WAV, so nothing is rounded away.
How big will the WAV be?
About 10 MB a minute in stereo at 44,100 Hz, and a little more at 48,000 Hz, so an hour of video gives 600 to 700 MB of sound. A mono WAV is half that.
Can I send it to a transcription service?
Yes. Most take WAV, and some ask for mono at 16,000 Hz: set Channels and Sample rate under More options. Or skip the WAV and transcribe the video here.
Can I turn a WAV into an MP4?
Not on this page, which gives you sound only. To put a WAV's sound on a video you already have, use Replace audio in video.
