AAC or Apple Lossless

An M4A is Apple's MP4 file with only sound in it. Most hold AAC, which keeps files small by leaving out detail you're unlikely to hear; some hold Apple Lossless, which keeps all of it. Voice memos, GarageBand exports, and songs bought on iTunes all end in .m4a.

Questions

Does converting M4A to WAV lose quality?

No. The WAV holds everything in the M4A, sample for sample, and takes nothing more away. It can't put back what AAC left out, so it sounds exactly like the M4A, not better.

What if the M4A is Apple Lossless?

Then the WAV is an exact copy of the recording, and a 24-bit file stays 24-bit. Voice memos are Apple Lossless when Audio Quality is set to Lossless in the Voice Memos settings.

How do I convert a voice memo on my iPhone?

In Voice Memos, tap the memo, tap More, and choose Save to Files. Then open this page in Safari, add the memo from Files, and download the WAV.

Why is the WAV so much bigger?

AAC packs sound into a small file; a WAV stores every sample. A minute of stereo at 44,100 Hz comes to about 10 MB as a WAV, and mono to about 5 MB, where the M4A is often a tenth of that.

Which apps need WAV instead of M4A?

Samplers, older editors, phone systems, some transcription and voice tools, and many upload forms take WAV but not M4A. A WAV opens almost everywhere, on Windows, Mac, and Linux alike.
