Why WAVs are so big

Audo's WAV to MP3 converter shrinks WAVs of up to 10 GB without an account, and the first hour of each is free, 10 times a day, no sign-up needed. A 3-minute recording usually takes about 4 seconds.

A WAV stores sound uncompressed: every sample, exactly as recorded. At CD quality (44,100 samples a second, 16 bits, stereo) that's 1,411 kbps, about 10 MB a minute. Recorders, audio interfaces, and recording software save WAV because nothing is lost, which makes it the right format to edit and mix.

An MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB a minute, roughly a seventh of the size. Keep the WAV as your original, and send the MP3. For an even smaller file, such as to email a long recording, Compress audio goes lower.

Questions

How do I convert a WAV file to MP3?

Add the WAV, leave Convert to on MP3, and download it. That's all it takes to save a WAV as an MP3, on a computer or a phone.

Is there a free WAV to MP3 converter?

Yes. Without signing up, Audo turns the first hour of each WAV into an MP3 for free, 10 times a day. Converting a longer WAV is $0.01 a minute ($0.60 an hour), with no subscription needed — see pricing.

Is MP3 better quality than WAV?

No. A WAV keeps every detail of the recording, and an MP3 leaves some out to be far smaller. At 192 kbps or more, most people can't hear the difference.

Which bitrate should I pick?

192 kbps, the default, suits most music and speech. Pick 320 kbps, the highest MP3 has, to keep the most detail. For a voice on its own, 128 kbps is often enough, and the file is a third smaller than at 192.

Can I make MP3s for an audiobook?

Yes. ACX, Audible's publishing platform, asks for MP3s of 192 kbps or more at 44.1 kHz, at a constant bitrate. A 44.1 kHz WAV converted at 192 or 320 kbps fits. Boost volume can check ACX's level rules too.

Does it work on 24-bit WAV?

Yes. WAV files of 16 or 24 bits, and 32-bit float ones, all convert the same way.

Will the MP3 be as loud as the WAV?

Yes. It keeps the WAV's level. If the WAV's peaks reach right to the top, the MP3 comes down just under it, so it never distorts.

Can I make a mono MP3?

Yes. Under More options, Channels turns stereo into mono, which suits a single voice.
